it tells me ferret locked the commenting on that lj post so:
Subject: Re: for posterity
You seem like one of the sane ones here. I have to ask, how long do you think it takes before people Close To Source(tm) realize that regardless of intent, this 'project' does, in fact, reduce people to body parts?

the rational cynic part of me says 'never,' the budding buddhist part of me says 'in another life'

a lot of the supporters involved in that experience are of a shameful age, ferret himself being in his 30s, and it gets harder to objectively recognize flaws in your circle... especially with that really common die-hard congoblin fallacy of clinging to your friends no matter what

it's a subculture so devoid of judgement that criticism is pretty much unacceptable

i was accused of believing women unable to make their own decisions and the women opposed were more snidely accused of being ashamed, prudeness, 'vanilla,' 'normality' and other such garbage so it's not even a philosophical battleground, it's a giant justification for ogrish behaviour obsfuscated just well enough that the arguments contrary are too complex to penetrate the veil in their entirety

this guy deconstructs it pretty well on his journal

hope this helps

I think this has a lot to do with why I stopped participating in con culture, and geek culture in general. Granted, I was an anime con boy, myself, and I still participate to the extent that I participate as a member of staff on a couple of cons, but the culture that tends to foment itself in the attendees of such events (and frequently in the staff as well I admit, though usually not as well-received) is one that feels persecuted in mainstream society, regardless of reason or virtue for being excluded or expelled from social circles.

I wish I could seriously argue that this behavior pattern is not endemic to geekdom, but I think that's a lot of why many of my closest friends and I all gravitated away from the animu culture in which we were so entwined in high school and college. "Hurr hurr, boobies" only gets you so far. When we got bored of it and our other friends were still going "Hey look, breasts!", I don't remember how events played out precisely, but I feel like the mentality we must have adopted was "Uh, sure, whatever. We'll just be over here, talking about shit that might actually matter."

I'm getting kind of rambly in my friends-only post though, and the response in spite of the comment-offage was definitely appreciated. Thanks!

Surely, though so many thanks may be overboard. It's a small matter to compliment good work. :)
